TWG recently welcomed Summer Law Clerks Piper Hampton and John Ralston to the team.
Hampton is from Norman, Oklahoma, and attends the University of Oklahoma College of Law. Ralston is a Wichita native and attends Washburn University School of Law. Both will be third-year law students in the fall.
As law clerks, Hampton and Ralston assist TWG attorneys with various projects, such as drafting documents and researching legal issues.
“It just depends on the type of law and the type of attorney that comes up to you,” Hampton said. “But you’re not limited to just one type of work here; you get everything.”
Hampton said the opportunity to intern with TWG grabbed her interest because she wanted to branch out of Oklahoma. She started her internship with the firm on June 1 and said she is excited to be in Wichita.
“It was kind of a leap of faith coming here because I’d never spent time in the Wichita area. But I’m glad I did it,” she said.
Ralston said, being a Wichita native, he wanted to get an internship in his hometown. He knew TWG attorney Matthew Schippers, as they are both Weigand Scholars. Ralston said Schippers encouraged him to apply for the internship with TWG, and he is glad he did.
Ralston started his internship on May 24 and said he has enjoyed working with the TWG attorneys. He said he’s grateful they encourage him to ask questions about the job.
“Their willingness to make time for us is just fantastic,” Ralston said.
He described TWG as a professional but inviting environment.
Hampton said she agrees with Ralston and thinks the help and feedback of the TWG attorneys is unique.
“I’ve always felt comfortable to speak openly and to ask questions,” she said. “I think that’s a huge advantage and speaks to the character of the attorneys and staff that work here.”
Although Hampton has worked at TWG for less than two weeks, she has already gotten a lot of experience.
“I’ve attended a hearing at the courthouse, helped attorneys prepare for an upcoming trial, and drafted documents that will be submitted to the court,” she said. “That’s not something that many of my fellow classmates can say about themselves and their internships.”
Both interns said they are still exploring the kind of work they want to pursue after law school, but they both want to gain more experience this summer and can see Wichita as a place where they would like to work post-graduation.
Hampton and Ralston will intern with TWG until the beginning of August.
